Mary-Jayne Rust: Ecopsychology – Shadow and Transformation

This video was made during our recent Ecopsychology course at Schumacher College in March. Mary-Jayne explores shadow and transformation during an open evening lecture…

‘In a dark time the eye begins to see. Facing the personal and collective shadow of ecological crisis can transform our vision of self and other. From re-thinking personal symptoms, such as depression or addiction, to the shift in human-earth relationship, what are the pearls to be found?’

Dolphin Wisdom

Last Thursday I was lucky enough to be sailing with my family off the coast of Croatia in a friend’s yacht. Suddenly, like lightening striking from beneath the sea, there were dolphins riding the bow wave.

The greatest joy was watching my five year-old daughter and her three year-old friend hang over the sides, waving and talking to them…

… and seeing the dolphins twist their bodies to look up in response.

Fills me with hope.

More ecopsychology at Schumacher College

After the success of the three-week ‘Ecopsychology: Exploring the Roots to Change’ course that Mary-Jayne Rust and I co-led at Schumacher College in March, we have been asked to lead further one-week courses in July and October.

The July course is based on the first week of the three-week programme and is called: ‘Ecopsychology: experiencing the ecological Self’. The October course is yet to be posted online but will be based on the second week of the three-week programme on ecopsychology theory.

For more information and bookings visit the Schumacher College website.

Ecopsychology courses, reflections and news – Spring 2011

Hello!

Two months in to my new project as a self-employed ecopsychologist so I thought I would let you know how it’s going. Well things are blossoming! It’s been non-stop since the middle of February and the closure of Footprint. I’ve scheduled four new courses through the summer, co-led a three-week ecopsychology course at Schumacher College in March, co-written two academic papers and (nearly) finished two book chapters.

Next up is a three-day “Natural Change Taster“  course in Cornwall and then the final one-day workshop for the current WWF Natural Change Project in Edinburgh in May, followed by a six-day Natural Change for Facilitators course in June.

Upcoming Ecopsychology Courses

Natural Change
Natural Change is an outdoor-based experiential programme grounded in ecopsychology and designed to engage and support leaders in pro-environmental behaviour. The original Natural Change Project was commissioned by WWF-Scotland in 2008 and completed in March 2009. The second programme is currently ongoing and can be followed live on the Natural Change blog.

To support the WWF Project, and to develop Natural Change as a more widely accessible approach to leadership for sustainability training, we are offering a selection of short courses over the summer.

Natural Change Taster (3-days)
This course is for those wanting to sample some of the approaches used on WWF’s Natural Change Project. It does not promise the same kind of outcomes as the full Natural Change process of course – which runs for 16 days over six months – but will give participants a brief insight into what the process is like. The course could be considered a simple personal development opportunity, or it may provide insights for professional development and application.

This is also an opportunity for those that have already worked with David Key, Margaret Kerr and Mary-Jayne Rust over the years to reconnect with the magic and power of the solo and story telling practice that forms the core of our work.

Natural Change for Facilitators (6-days)
This course is a professional development programme for those interested in facilitating groups using approaches pioneered in WWF’s Natural Change Project.

Facilitating the Natural Change process requires a depth of experience and a breadth of practical and psychological skills. This training programme will identify what those skills are, explore pathways to gain the relevant experience and cover the techniques, theoretical bases, practices and processes involved in leading Natural Change style programmes.

Ecopsychology at Schumacher College
Last week Mary-Jayne Rust, Viola Sampson and I finished running a three week course at Schumacher College in Devon called: ‘Ecopsychology: exploring the roots to change’. We enjoyed an incredible group, which at one point got to 31 people, and three weeks of near perfect weather.

As part of the programme I ran an open evening session about WWF’s Natural Change Project which has been published as a short film. Click here to watch.

The course included a week of experiential learning, including a day solo on Dartmoor, a week of theory and a week exploring practical applications. We’ve been asked back to run further one week courses in July and October.

Footprint’s behind me!
It’s been nearly two months now since Osbert and I closed Footprint Consulting and the dust is starting to settle. I’m focusing on providing facilitation, designing change programmes or projects, some academic teaching, and research.

If you want to bring ecopsychology to a project, give me a call!

I also now offer a professional mentoring programme for anyone who needs support weaving ecopsychology into their professional or personal life.

WWF’s Natural Change Project – video

This is a video of me presenting an open evening at Schumacher College about WWF’s Natural Change Project. It gives a basic overview of the project but – because the talk was designed for a more general audience – it doesn’t explore the psychological processes of Natural Change in any detail.

If you would like an actual, albeit very short, experience of the Natural Change process, sign up for one of our 3-day ‘Natural Change Taster’ courses this summer. If you would like to find out more about the facilitation of this process, check out our ‘Natural Change for Facilitators Course’.

The Wild Men

in the city
they are invisible
they dwell
at the edge of colour
empty shadows
against white
gently disappearing

they stand
blood-soaked
their power forced
into machine gun fire
and the roar of engines
their shoulders stiff
with the weight
of unborn children

at school gates
and bus stops
at desks
and in kitchens
in cars, alone
their hearts pound
with insatiable longing

they rage
in the language of oceans
far beyond any coast
they roar like waves
unheard

but their scarred hands
are caressed by raindrops
there is sea in their veins
fire in their hearts
a distant drum
beats their rhythm

on mountains
and in forest
they become light
cloud-headed
rock-footed
bodies arced
along the earth’s gentle curve

and one day
they will emerge from the earth
dripping with flowers
their hands held out
offering unfathomable mystery

one day
they will be freed
by the swoop of a bird
by the relief of sunlight
by a child’s curiosity

one day they will come
make fire in the dark
and burn like stars
they will fill their emptiness with love
and empty themselves
into the earth

one day
they will be seen
gently appearing
colour and light
spectacular

the wild men

Hand Made Natural Change
