Scottish Wilderness Trail Programme
The Wilderness Foundation are well established and known in South Africa. For many years they have offered their iconic “trails” in the Umfolozi National Park. I was approached by the Foundation to explore the possibilities for offering a similar wilderness experience in Britain.
The pilot programme was based on a four day, five-night journey through Knoydart in North West Scotland. This format was repeated with a group of environmental lawyers the following year. The programmes were very successful in themselves but raised numerous logistical, staffing and funding challenges for the Foundation.
Today they offer a range of experiences but have focused their efforts on working with urban youth at risk and with the therapeutic aspects of nature. They still also offer UK clients access to the South African Trail programme.
